Good Friday is on the 15th of April this year and although it is a Bank holiday it is not a statutory public holiday. The banks are closed, and some schools and businesses may also close but employers are not obliged to give the day off or pay the Public Holiday entitlement for Good Friday. Some companies do however give Good Friday as a company-paid day. This is done at the discretion of the employer and may be included in the contractual terms of employment.
Is Easter Monday a Public Holiday?
Easter Monday, on the other hand, is a Public Holiday. Employees who work or are required to work (i.e., rostered) on a public holiday are entitled to one of the following:
- a paid day off on the public holiday
- a paid day off within a month
- an extra day’s annual leave
- an extra day’s pay
Which of these is given is up to the employer to decide.
Employees who are not normally required to work or are not rostered to work on a public holiday will be entitled to one-fifth of the normal weekly rate of remuneration for the public holiday.
